id Software bought by Bethesda Softworks' parent company

Postby dyn » Wed Jun 24, 2009 17:58 UTC

Yes, it happened. No more independent id Software. I was speculating it may happen, because they produced nothing big in past few years, with Q4 and DOOM3 being dead online, and certainly not as popular as they wanted them to be. Then QuakeLive, they expected millions of players, in reality they got 600k registrations and few thousand active users, which is very bad for ad-driven game, ad spam works only when you have really big audience or send spam to millions of people at once.

lol at the discussions.

id's past few releases haven't really been knockouts ("eh, it's good, but not as good as ____ was"), nor have they seemed to have had any direction or focus. they've been riding their own coattails.

zenimax probably picked them up just for the id brand and to gain some footing with the fps market.

will it make any difference? i don't really think it matters anymore, but maybe if id people are freed from flushing themselves down the toilet, they'll have enough space to return to innovation. probably not, but at the very least it generates some market interest in what zenimax might pull off.

In a press release for today's news, Altman laid out a vision for a robust id: "We, along with many others, consider id Software to be among the finest game studios in the world, with extraordinary design, artistic and technical capabilities. They have demonstrated, repeatedly, that rare ability to create franchise properties that are critical and commercial successes. Our intention is to make sure id Software will continue to do what they do best – make AAA games. Our role will be to provide publisher support through Bethesda Softworks and give id Software the resources it needs to grow and expand."

they haven't been able to churn out one decent game on the level of previous work, so obviously the best thing to do is focus on building pipelines.

this is exactly the type of speak that is so empatically snore-inducing.

This is über crap... Not only will they tell id Software what to produce, but also you can pretty much forget about stuff like releasing source to game engines and, well even things like blood effects, demonic themes in games and so on. You know, anything which may be "bad" for sales will be deleted. To me id Software was without soul for some time already, now it's officially confirmed.

Projects based on id's source should also wrap up and stop. There are free engines which can accomplish much more than q3 source. OK, except DOOM ports and such. :)

It would make sense from ZeniMax to tell them to finish it for holiday season. If it requires DX10+ then it may sell a lot less than games which work with DX9. Rushing it out will most probably happen and i believe it is still to early for DX10 only games, because of all the masses who run XP which is limited to DX9 (various DX10 hacks for XP are irrelevant).

Check this thread:
http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27291&page=11

A lot of good posts about how things work when someone merges with another company, and what you can expect from it. In short, not much of old will remain, and it will be very hard for them to make anything good, certainly not in doom/quake style. id Software from that period is dead.
