Damn, i would gladly donate you my older XP1800, but shipping would be 10x more than PC itself. I have this habit of giving older PCs away, to those who need it.

Maybe you could assemble something for cheap, many people are selling stuff. Usually you get most value if you buy entire PC from people who want to get rid of it asap. Don't forget to negotiate a bit.

Thanks. :) I do the same thing.
If I'm lucky, it might just be the power supply. When I boot up the computer, it goes through all it's checks and tests, but then when the XP logo should be coming on screen, it just stays black. (I've had a similar problem before) I had a whole lot of tools and stuff stolen from me a month or so ago, my multi-meter being among everything, so I haven't had the chance to test it yet. I might have another one at home somewhere to try swapping it out with.

Tried that. Pulled out my ATI card, and tried using the onboard. It did the same thing.

Thanks guys I really appreciate how you all came together to help me and karen out. As you all know, our business is dead and we are barely making the payments on the bills. We just cant afford to buy a new PC now not even a $200 one.

Karen has a dell p4/ht 3.4GHZ 1GB 400/533 DRAM 256MB nVidia video card. I swapped out all the parts I had extra for (power supply, video card, memory, etc) The only things left original are the mobo, processor and HD.

Now what happens is when you turn it on you hear the fans and everythign spinning but the nothing else. You dont hear any HD activity and the monitor does not power up/no signal. At first this would lead me to think the mobo or proc but a weird thing is that the switch wont power the pc off again, you need to switch off at the power supply swicth on the back. And when yuou turn the ps back on the pc often turns itself back on every few hours unless you unplug it. The switch also feels "funny" when you push it but that might be me because now i have it in my head that its the power switch. But because its this dell case, theres absolutley no way to get to the switch without breaking the case apart.

Im gonna try a few more things this weekend and if i still cant it going my friends I will have to beg for one of those pc's you guys want to donate to the poor gumby & karen fund lol. Karen is just about ready to kill me in her sleep she has not quakes in TWO YEARS! and she loves to quake for hours on end for those that remember her.

the p4 is a perfect fit actually, its the exact specs. I wouldn't need any ram, im pretty sure hers is still good and if not I have 2x256 laying around. If it still has a power supply in it it would save me a lot of time =)

I could print out a shipping label thru paypal and mail it to you =)

Sorry to hear about your biz, Gumby. We need to start something new.

Could be many things, maybe just simple switch problem, not PSU or anything serious. But it may require new PC case. If there is an error on MB you usually hear beep(s), which signal where problem occurred. It seems to be something around PSU-MB-connections/voltage, or messed up BIOS settings.

Try with some Live CD, either live Linux distro or install/repair XP again, with XP CD. If you can't do any of that, then it may be overheating, but that usually shows later, not after cold start. Just in case press Pause and check if CPU settings are OK, you may also want to check inside BIOS settings as well. If you can, run memtest or use something more advanced with many diagnostic tools on it, like UBCD, Isow's MultiBoot (great!) or Hiren's Boot CD (very popular!).

Sorry to hear man, from my past issues at the office here, that normally is a Motherboard/Processor problem. In most occasions it was the mb. Hope things start to turn around and gt better for you :). At the great Mr. Dirt says Lifes a Garden Dig It, Gotta Keep on Keeping On.

Yes, this is why live or rescue CD/DVD is best. In case of corrupted system you can safely copy as much data as possible before trying to boot it again. In case of HDD problems some are using Spinrite and various undelete utils, but this actually is not the best idea, because each attempt to rescue data from the affected area increases chances more damage will be done. It's best to do low-level copy first with utils like dd_rescue to another HDD, and only after that attempt to recover or format with Spinrite and similar. This is in case of HDD problems, i don't believe Gumby and DS need to do it, but it may be a good idea to check the system from live CD and run diagnostic tools in any case. There are also many Linux rescue solutions, with updated anti-virus and other system utilities.

Hey Gumby,
One thing you should check out is the connections from the power supply to the motherboard. The last time I put my computer back together I forgot that the chord for my pwrsw was yellow and the chord for my hdled was red, which is the exact opposite of the connections on the motherboard. I ended up breadboarding it before realizing that I hadn't broken my computer, I was just a dumbass.

Dean,
Have you tried booting it up and then letting it sit on the black screen for a half hour or so? I was having a similar problem with my computer after having gotten a virus and running a boot cleaner cd. Every time I booted I would get to this black screen where I could see the mouse cursor but nothing else. One time, in frustration, I decided to walk away and get some lunch. Came back a half hour later and my desktop was up.

Dean

This might help. I did some research and found this.

1. Enter Windows XP Recovery Console.

2. When you reach the command prompt, type the following and then press Enter.

fixmbr

3. The fixmbr utility will write a master boot record to the hard drive that you're currently using to boot into Windows XP. This will repair any corruption or damage that the master boot record may have.

4. Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.

Assuming that a corrupt master boot record was your only issue, Windows XP should now start normally.

Hope this helps.

=)
