What happens when you steal a hacker's computer

Zoz has some interesting insights at the end of the video, such as how lower security settings allowed him to recover his machine, the caveats of keyloggers vs. keychains, etc.

Story's pretty funny, too. :)

It's nice to see he got his Mac back after 2 years of searching. He certainly was obsessed by it, who else would search for outdated hardware despite having backups of everything important. Fun element is when he was able to utilize existing web service he used before to get Mac's new ip/location. Then he hacked into it and got all the info required. Or we should rather say "hacked" because everything was left intact, and he knew how to access his Mac remotely. Obviously both thief and buyer of this stolen Mac were stupid enough not to format it, but i also wonder why the original owner didn't use some form of disk encryption -- perhaps his data was too unimportant and uninteresting in the first place.

I hope DEFCON had something more interesting to offer. Compare the story above with this:

Or, the best of it all, old school hacking: :)

Hope2604 - Steve Rambam Pt. 2 – Privacy Is Dead – Get Over It (2006)

"In 2006, privacy expert Steven Rambam’s two hour panel was disrupted by federal authorities who arrested him at the conference just prior to its commencement. In the end, he was completely vindicated and went on to finally give his talk several months later to a packed house at a local university. This year, Steven will be on for three hours, in part to make up for what you may have missed last time, but mostly because what he says about the state of privacy in our society will captivate you. Since 1980, Pallorium's investigators have successfully closed more than 9,500 cases, ranging from homicide investigations to missing persons cases to the investigation of various types of sophisticated financial and insurance frauds. Steven Rambam has coordinated investigations in more than fifty (50) countries, and in nearly every U.S. State and Canadian province."
