apparently wants q3 on the iphone, but to merge changes in quake live to "make it more modern"... by which i assume he means in-game ads zing

How innovative (not), considering most DOOM 1/2 mobile/handheld ports were made by other people. Now, few years later they want to have Q3 on phones. Speaking about "innovation", Q3 thru the browser is not new idea at all, check this out: http://necromanthus.com/Games/ShockWave/quake3.html -- Q3 in a browser, created back in 2006. It's only SWF but it is the same idea, without ads -- because author was not THAT innovative. :-D

If they really cared about the community they would modernize Q3 and release it for free. Releasing outdated source code is nice contribution too, but it doesn't keep the community up, it just provides new developers with source code and maybe some project emerges from it, with some micro community around it, ie. 50 players online worldwide.

What i am saying is not that hard to understand and i am wondering why are they doing all this ad crap while q3 numbers are shrinking daily. And what improvements are there in QL? Queue system(tm), Slow loading stuff thru browser(tm), More ads than ever(tm), 1999-game-with-new-HUD(tm)? This is all they can do for Q3 in 10 years?

Time to find some other game or start our own. :)

id is so innovative there still isn't an intel-native id q3 client for the mac -- someone else had to do that for them.

and quake live still doesn't work on a mac either. 1998 must be a great place to live.

"1998 featured the birth of iMac, too much Monica Lewinski, Europe going ‘Euro’, Jordan’s last game in Chicago, embassy bombings, the birth of Google, a juiced McGuire dinging 70, a pro wrestler becoming Governor of Minnesota, and Seinfeld doing nothing for the very last time. It was a good year for writers, offering many insightful perspectives for us all to ponder."
