a problem connection

A strange fact happened with me. I cannot play on any Vogon server. “Awaiting challenge” is displayed continually. A couple of days ago my brother (EpoxyUrethan) played on the Anarchy server and told me that he was blocked (artificial lag).
It would be great to know what really happened and why I cannot play .

EpoxiUretan was banned for insane amounts of lag. His connection was far too choppy making him extremely difficult to hit. His ping is/was always around 200, there are players with higher ping than that that do not have a glitchy connection. He was asked nicely SEVERAL times to sort his connection out and warned he would be kicked if he did not. There was never any response from him despite several attempts at communication. If you are playing from the same computer/same IP then you will not be able to connect, if you fix/unlag your connection your/his ban will be happily removed.

It occured to me at the time that maybe EpoxiUretan could not speak English, now I see that the OP on this thread is his brother and he is in Moscow, unfortunately I cannot speak any Russian. and_or maybe you could communicate to your brother why he was banned as you seem to speak good English. Please fix your connection and I will unban you with immediate effect.

I’ve understood.
I have the lag problem on other Q3 servers located in Russia. I tried to fix it, but lagging appear over and over again thus I don’t suppose how to repair it.
How can I improve my connection?
Please, give me a couple advices to fix lag problem.

P.S. It would be helpful to know what kind of player actions (excepting cheats) is usually punished by blocking and banning.

There are a number of factors to consider when talking about lag. Your ping was around 200 ish, this shouldn't cause you lag up to the extent you were. What do you have your rate and maxpackets set to?

As for actions to invoke a ban, here on Vogon cheating is looked upon with a very disapproving eye, but most of the time if a player is banned for cheating and then (possibly after a discussion) stop cheating they are usually allowed back to enjoy the servers. Grossly insulting or abusing other players is not allowed either. However, no one will be kicked for friendly banter so feel free to enjoy the odd heated debate or two, common sense should tell you where to draw the line.
In fairness I did warn your brother several times but he did not respond, I kicked him and he still made no effort to rectify the problem so unfortunately a ban was the only option left open to me at the time. I appreciate this may have been due to a language barrier. It is not our aim or goal to ban anyone but you/he cannot play with a connection like that, I observed EpoxiUretans movements from other players perspectives and you/he disappears/reappears etc etc and are virtually impossible to hit - which is unfair on other players. We have some very good FFA players here and EpoxiUretan was continually trouncing them because his lag was making him so difficult to see/hit.
Make efforts to fix your connection, you do not need to lag up that badly, we have other Russian players who do not experience this problem which is one factor that indicates your lag is artificial ie deliberate, although I appreciate Russia is a very big country. If this is not the case you should be able to rectify the problem with relative ease.
Let me know of your progress,

PS, this is unlikely but if you are downloading in the background or have a lot of bandwidth intensive apps running whilst trying to play Q3 your connection will lag horrendously (unless you have a very fast/high performance connection). It happens to me, if I am downloading then I will lag up pretty badly. Hence, I do not download or have any other net intensive apps running. And I also have a shitty connection to start with.

If I were unbanned I could try to rectify my connection speed.

I have a lan connection (3-5 Mbit/sec, in reality lower) and many programs dealing with internet.

I would suggest, if possible, to exit all programs that hog your connection whilst you want to play Q3. Ultimately, it will result in a more pleasant playing experience for you if your connection is smoother.

Maxpackets is ok, I believe that a rate of 35000 combined with maxpackets 30 will achieve best ping so might be worth a shot.
