How many of you play without a crosshair?

Postby Weegee » Wed Aug 24, 2011 10:41 UTC

I disabled it the other day... now it feels like an unnecessary burden to me. Instead of pointing a dot at a player model, I just... shoot it, don't think. My aim got much better since, to the point of being able to shoot down seemingly "impossible" targets, sometimes - without even realizing how did I manage to do that. I wonder how common is such preference, anyone else out there??

i've done that before. i eventually went back to a dot, but i agree it does help to improve your aim.

I think it was around 1997, when we were creating chaos and destruction on QuakeWorld servers, i remember how we occasionally made fun of other clan members when we saw screenshots with crosshair enabled. :-D

It was actually deeper than that, it literally divided our clan into 2 groups. One was mindless "chaos and destruction" action/carnage type of play -- and we had lots of fun! -- another was all those pussies bunny-hopping around the map for half an hour, searching for Red Armor and Quad, before they could gather enough courage to face you. It even went so far they created a separate clan, behind our backs, of course. Quake 1 supported that type of playing, whoever got RL/LG+RA+Quad, and camp around the map, could get high score without much skill required. That was also the reason they refused to play on Q2, because it was better designed -- as funny as this may sound. Later, when Q3 was out, i laughed when some of them said it is too fast for them -- and this was for normal Q3, not what we play today. :-D

I think thats the reason i like vogon so much, its pure carnage. I enjoy clan arena and instagib on quake live alot too.. Duel and ffa get irritating after awhile tho cause i just dont wanna time the armor/power ups.. Also weapons in quake live ffa take a full 2-3 seconds longer to respawn, with 12 people its stupid.. Q3A ffa is better by far.

im sorry to stray so far off topic but is Quake 1 dead? that game was so fun with all the traps n stuff. would a server be possible?

btw i tried playing with no crosshair, its great with a few players and i was really surprised i could still get good accuracy. but with a lot off people its quite hard, had to turn it on again so i dont spam a lot.

If you played without it for longer, you wouldn't spam. Also if someone set up a Q1 server, I'd play it just to experience some gaming history. (I missed that one part of it, sadly)

Well some people still play it, you can see active servers here:
http://www.quakeservers.net/

And also you need modern QW (QuakeWorld) client, like ezQuake or FTEQW:
http://ezquake.sourceforge.net/
http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/EzQuake
http://www.fteqw.com/
http://www.fteqw.com/screenshots (it also supports other games including Q2 and Q3!)
FuhQuake was also nice and popular, not sure if project is still active...
http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/FuhQuake
http://www.shacknews.com/file/2917/fuhquake-installer-v031

Modern QW ports need original Quake pak files, not necessarily full install, just base pak files, which is good for backups/portability. There are more than one, for quite complete list check this nice Q1 site: http://quakeone.com/files/1-quake-clients/. Also this: http://www.quakewiki.net/quake-1-engines/

I did try several few years ago, i liked Fitzquake, it is very stable and clean, even fixes original Q1 bugs. It reminds me of Chocolate Doom, kind of port which focuses on stability and it doesn't add anything new, in contrast to other ports which usually incorporate new graphic effects by default, and sometimes change original look and feel. Some also have very advanced scripting for configs and so on.

And this is how other ports can improve graphics...

ive seen darkplaces while playing nexuiz.. its pretty crazy that a modified quake 1 engine can slow a relatively fast pc to a crawl lol. with all the effects turned up darkplaces is very impressive. i remember trying fitzquake too.. im thinking about getting the quake expansions cuz i never got to play them. the only time i really played Quake 1 was on Nintendo 64 a looong time ago lol. splitscreen quake was actually a LOT of fun

Darkplaces i think is not optimized too well, for what it offers it could run a bit faster. Mostly i used ezQuake, FuhQuake and FitzQuake. FTEQW was still in beta or alpha at that time and not very stable.

Q1 has quite a few mission packs, offical and unofficial. Some of them are very good. Of course it also has a lot of single-player maps or map packs, some of which are even better than maps included in mission packs.
