Q3 download test (2 servers)

Keep this private, to avoid confusion... If testing is successful we will use this improved download technology for maps server. Server won't appear on the mast list, you need to connect manually....

US download test server: 184.82.87.51:40001
UK download test server: 109.200.19.178:40001

you can use shortcuts:
Code: Select all
start quake3 +connect 184.82.87.51:40001 +set cl_punkbuster 0 +set ui_cdkeychecked 1 +set cl_allowDownload 1

Code: Select all
start quake3 +connect 109.200.19.178:40001 +set cl_punkbuster 0 +set ui_cdkeychecked 1 +set cl_allowDownload 1

If you want to test it more than one time, then you need to delete {q3}/test/ dir, or at least downloaded pk3 file inside.
Code: Select all
del /s /f test\*.pk3*

Don't forget /cl_allowDownload 1, if it is not enabled already. Also cl_packetdup should be default 1. Then, if you have problems with downloading make sure you have cl_maxpackets 40-90, rate 40000-80000 and snaps 30-40. While those are not important for the new download system, it is good to have them set at proper values.

Let me know about this:
- What was the average download speed? Is this good speed for your line capacity?
- Did download occasionally freeze/pause -- few of those are OK, constant freezing is not.
If yes, how much time elapsed before it recovered? Should be under 0.5 sec.
- Did download finish successfully? This means you should enter the game, either q3dm1 or a custom map.

Ideally you could get 800-990 kb/s with very little random "freezing". This is because server occasionally needs to re-send lost packets. Normal Q3 download speed is ~20k/s, so anything higher is a plus! :)

Something i noticed -- it seems download is a lot smoother if you try it for the 2nd or 3rd time. Like server is adjusting something based on your latency or connection. However for the UK it was better right away.

This can be improved a little, but first i need to see if you can even download properly, before optimizing anything.

Monika from Poland got 999-1050 k/s to the UK. :)

This is sending data over UDP stream, so latency doesn't influence it much. It does just a bit, because for each "bucket" of packets (48-64, depends) there must be acknowledgement from the client side, or else server re-sends them, as long as client is still there.

I just tested at US. It started at 66k and within 15-20 secs it dropped (steadily) to 4k :(

And at UK the same thing. Didn't start as high but again dropped to 4k.

Can you test this over different connection? Seems like congestion of sort, i can make different server but first others need to try as well. Anything different will be slower generally.

Not really! My line will support download speeds of around 110k/s (stop laughing!) and I am downloading stuff at the moment at around 90-100k from other sources (I wasn't when I was testing)

US is running more relaxed version, which should give max 400 k/s but it is better for slower connections, because max packet size is smaller.

Btw, this something ISP could improve by handling bigger packets better, it would allow for more data to go through with each packet.

* osx lion
* university ethernet connection
* ioq3 version 1.36

* cl_maxpackets 90
* cl_packetdup 1
* rate 75000
* snaps 40

### us first try

* ~500 kb/sec
* occasional < 0.5 sec freezes around every 5 or 10 seconds
* at 40% left, speed slowly dropped below 100 kb/sec
* time left increased, download size stayed the same
* after ~2 minutes, was disconnected with the message "server connection timed out"

# us second try

* deleted test/
* ~500 kb/sec
* same initial freezes as above
* made it to 20% remaining before speed drop
* time left increased, download size stayed the same
* after ~10 minutes, speed was at 20 kb/sec and i manually disconnected

# us third try

* deleted test/
* ~400 kb/sec
* same initial freezes
* once again made it to 20% remaining before drop
* manually disconnected

no successful downloads

### uk first try

* ~1 mb/sec
* same small < 0.5 sec freezes but fewer than us
* finished downloading in ~30 sec

# uk second try

* deleted test/
* ioq3 crashed

# uk third try

* deleted test/
* ~1 mb/sec
* fewer freezes
* finished in ~30 sec

# uk fourth try

* deleted test/
* ioq3 crashed

# uk fifth try

* deleted test/
* ~1 mb/sec
* finished in ~30 sec

on both servers, received console message "WARNING: server allows download redirection, but does not have sv_dlURL set" on each try.

"WARNING: server allows download redirection, but does not have sv_dlURL set" is for web downloads, it would redirect ioq3 clients there for faster dl.

US uses lighter server version, max would be ~400k/s and map is limited to 32.00 MB, so if it stops there it is not your fault.

AG, very interesting to see 1mb/s from the UK >>> US! :)

Moved to Q3 section.

Servers are still up, UK should be faster than US, no matter what latency (ping) you have.

Hi, from UK server downloading 520-580kB/s and from US 250-280kB/s. But now I am at work(austria) and connection speed is max ca 650kB/s. Maybe at home will be better.(ca 36Mb/s speed line)

On US server lagged but this is normal i think, from europe. Ping 140 and more and FPS fluctuated.

Great! I will try to combine both in case someone has problems with high-speed variant @ UK. US server is slower but more compatible with different network configs.

Yes, US may have some stability issues. It is not our fault, it should be better since yesterday.
