544 total players on USA servers
202 on UT4 mod
260 playing 'q3' maps
82 on undefined maps ( usually custom dm with bots, like charondm* )

Out of 260 only 50 are real players, all others are bots, ca. 20% of total.
So out of 82 undefined it would be ca. 15 players which means max. 65 people are playing Q3 right now in the USA.

There are some hardcore players in the EU, but Q3 is not popular elsewhere at all. China has total 8 players right now for Q3 and 46,048 for CS, Brazil 0 for Q3, etc.. Germany is pretty strong, but they stay at local servers. Russia has some more players, still not much compared to other games.

So out of 91 undefined it would be ca. 15 players which means max. 55 people are playing Q3 right now in the USA.

Also, not all players are from the USA. Actually most of those who play on the USA servers at off-peak hours are from the EU. If you do any stats, take into account Q3 numbers (without UT4) include many bots, only 20-25% are real players.

This was for off-peak hours. You can get 4-6x more people at peak hours, depends on the game type.

Update 2010-MAY-08:
I did some stats analysis today and verified all populated Q3 servers, minus mods like UT4 which are not Q3 anymore. Out of 890 players globally only about 100 were real people, all others are bots and in some instances fake players where you connect and there is nobody there, in other words, desperate admins trying to get people by spamming all over and faking stats.

This is way too low to enjoy a game, and it's not exactly off-peak time since it's Saturday @ 12:30 CEST and a lot of Q3 players are from Central/Eastern Europe. Maybe there will be 300 players globally later, we will see. Difference from stats we did last year is roughly this -- what was true for the USA is now global stats. Way too many servers and bots, plus irrelevant/fake results. Even when you manage to find good servers there is not much people around anymore. And some of us don't care about 3-4 players games either, we want 15+ players (30 ), and all the chaos which comes from it. If this is not possible anymore then Q3 is as good as dead, even if it has some players left.

QL is not much better, at peak times it doesn't even reach 2000 players worldwide. Stats are harder to collect since full servers are not listed, but then again there is not much of them anyway.

3/6/2009 06:20 AM EST - 178 out of 480 are real players, with peaks around 700 we can expect 150-350 players online (when bots stay 24/7).

So it would be approx. 35-55% of total number are real players. Better than Q3 but still when game is in this stage it becomes harder and harder to get people on server. This is also why so many servers for Q3/ET use bots.

Q3 which I've played since 2000. I don't hold out much hope though.

We don't need to give Q3 up, but with no players around it all becomes pretty boring and lifeless. Chart above shows Q3 with bots, real number is 20-30% of that.

Out of 309 only 138 are real players, all others are bots, ca. 44% of total.
So out of 132 undefined it would be ca. 59 players which means ca. 197 people are playing Q3 right now in the USA.

You can see higher % of normal players vs. bots, because servers use bot_minplayers and remove bots when there is enough players.

So, peak hours => 200 players, which makes sense, usually it is 4x-6x more than off-peak, which was 40 and 50.

dyn dont give up q3 servers lol i only just got good enough to come 2nd! (i came 1st one time he he) Im in UK which you would obviously group into ''EU players'' but im the only one I know in the UK that plays on Vogon! Hence yes I do play ''off peak'' hours, but i try to time it so as I can meet the US players in map. I'm probably not far wrong in saying I'm one of VERY few in the UK that still plays Q3, have all the latest games and a kick ass custom build PC to run them on, but to tell you the truth, I haven't played ANY other game since I started playing Q3 on Vogon servers! It's too addictive and I'm too weak willed to give it up lol! Q3 is by far (for me, only my preference) the best and most fun game I ever played, dont let it die out!

maybe this was already mentioned but a lot of players i've come across on various servers have been from poland, russia and brazil.

I don't think you need to worry about it dying out...we were thinking more of just bringing up a test TF2 server whilst keeping the Q3 servers alive for the time being.

ok, enough of the grim picture shit! Vogon is not going anywhere, and as a matter of fact dyn, myself, and the TMs have some serious improvements in the planning stage and in a month or two (or sooner) hopefully we will be ready to launch it to all Vogonites ! trust me if this gets up and takes off, Vogon will be a very busy place! i wish i could tell you more, but surprises are better right?
