Clean your PC! Today!

Postby SD » Fri May 20, 2011 16:36 UTC

We all know we *should* clean the inside of our cases/chassis out every so often, maybe with some soft vacuum attachment or something. But how many of us do? I for one don't. Well, DIDN'T! I do now. Switched on earlier and all the usual signs of life, except for the lack of anything on the monitor. No beeps, no POST, no nothing. Half an hour of fiddling and generally fucking around and still nothing. OUT WITH EVERYTHING!!!!! CPU / GFX card / RAM / drives / cabling / heatsinks / fans / PSU the LOT! Good clean (carefully, not in the sink!) shoved it all back together and hey presto - it works again! This happened to me once before and I did the same thing, except I was looking for burnt joints etc, couldn't find anything so put it all back together and it worked again, didn't make the connection with dust. I can only assume it WAS dust, maybe making some false connection some place. So now I think it will be a monthly thing to carefully clean out the dust from the inside.
Now go clean yours!
What do you mean you all "do that anyway" ? Smart asses :)

I actually just ordered a new computer case yesterday. Not happy with the airflow in my current case, plus things are so jammed together that it makes it a nightmare to get in there and change anything. But I do think that the airflow has gotten worse with dust. Def a good idea and clean it out every now and again.

Good advice, glad to see your PC is OK. Yes, dust can cause problems, especially when it starts to form dustballs and other alien life forms. :)

Right now i have PC case open and it is relatively clean, i cleaned it ~2 weeks ago, but without removing individual components. If you use vacuum cleaner make sure it is on low power.

.....how well do you think those "special" vacuum cleaners work for computers. By "special" i mean like those ani-static ones.

Yeah it's surprising what gets in there! I made this one maybe 4 years ago and used a fairly high end case, I set the fans up for through-flow (or my version of it) but I think this cooling system could be refined. I have a top fan mounted to impel, just slightly further front than the CPU fan, and a fan mounted to extract at the rear. I thought it would create a good "funnel" of air flow but not sure if it's having the desired effect after seeing the amount of crap in there!

Parrots rule! I used to look after an African Grey for some hotel owner nearby, when they went on holiday and stuff. And yeah, man are they messy! Chucking stuff out of the cage all the time! Lots of fun though. It ripped all the buttons out of my TV remote once, fucker!
