Forum updated

Postby dyn » Fri Apr 13, 2012 13:46 UTC

Forum was updated to the latest phpBB version 3.0.10, at same time i also updated server software, kernel, and php caching system. You may notice some changes around the user interface, mod pages, and so on. In case there is something b0rken or missing, let me know and i will fix it.

Forum runs slightly faster, however sometimes server is under heavy load which may delay responses a bit. Since we ran old phpBB version i decided to skip normal upgrade process, which involves multiple intermediate steps, and instead use new install with converted & optimized database, then images (avatars, uploaded pictures and smilies) were copied, favoring new files in case of duplicates. Transition should be seamless, except for those who used old Darkness theme. If i find something similar i will install it.

Some changes:
- quick reply is default phpBB one (part of forum software since 3.0.6 i think), not my Mini Quick Reply mod from 2009 :)
- captcha (text-image verification) is replaced by SimpleMath CAPTCHA Plugin, you need to solve stuff like "two + 3 =" -- it blocks most spammers for some reason! :king:
- NV recent topics is updated as well, very useful mod, we use it all the time, just like quick reply
- then i added Convert quoted images to url mod as well, which prevents forum to quote same images (wish other forums used something like that!)
- copyright at bottom is changed and phpBB is linked with url redirect service, this is to prevent spam bots from detecting forum software.

I also added this:
Instant Post Redirect - "Redirects instantly after posting a message instead of using meta redirection." :)

And inline code bbcode, you can see [c] button on the posting page. For bigger blocks of code, just use old [code] bbcode.

How come the darkness theme was booted out with the update? I used/like that theme :(
If you could find something similar that would be much appreciated!

Also, the chat thing seems to be missing? I'm on prosilver now though so some things are in a different place but I've looked and can't see it anywhere

This is what they have more or less, for 3.0.10: http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/?phpbb=3.0.10

Darkness was for 3.0.1, problem is it modifies files which changed a lot. Not all styles can be ported to new versions without breaking something.

Added Precise Similar Topics II mod. Very nice, i set search for even oldest posts (default is 1 year) and 8 topics, default is 5. You can see similar topics below each thread.

- Updated Precise Similar Topics II permissions for custom groups and default behavior, it will display correctly for more users now and search inside private forum sections as well
- installed American English, set it as the default language (otherwise British English is selected), updated all users to use 'en_us'. You can change it under User Control Panel > Board preferences > My language, or directly: ucp.php?i=prefs&mode=personal

- added bbcode buttons (posting buttons) for Quick Reply, also added Preview functionality, something i always missed with quick reply mods, including my mod for phpBB from 2008 :) [ Mini Quick Reply ] ... This new mod of existing default Quick Reply is very light since it basically uses what forum already has, with some minor modifications.

- updated bots/spiders list, which is from AUG 12 2012, from normal to spam bots and similar, without those total number would be around 348, but i think it is good to show all possible bots, so we can see and track their activity

Forum can now detect 605 (!) different bots:

Added [tr] bbcode for translation. You can see it as a button when posting. It should translate block of text or the entire page when activated. I think it translates entire page always so maybe we should move this to the top of the forum. Makes no sense, since there is code to isolate block of text.... Need to investigate.

Fixed -- but i wanted something else, combination of both... Will keep you updated. In the meantime forum was also updated, we need to upgrade soon.

Fixed again -- added new code to combine pull-down with sectional (inline) translation. It needs quick page refresh, but it is better and lighter than full-page translator.

Forum is running faster now.

Next thing i need to improve is YT embed stuff, we have different tags and i need to delete 2-3. You can use this:
Code: Select all
[yt]full url[/yt] like [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWcFTy8I87U&feature=related[/yt]
-- OR --
[youtube]aWcFTy8I87U[/youtube]

When using 'yt' it will remove crap like "&feature=related" and other unneeded parts of the URL.

The email system is fixed, you can use it for password reset, or to email other forum members. Email addresses are always hidden and emails sent are not recorded by forum. Keep in mind not every member can be reached that way, and many forum members do not set email to their real email. Email is sent out very fast because forum delegates this to another app, so after you click submit it will proceed to the next page immediately. Email is then sent to the recipient via Google Mail.

Updated to the latest 3.0.x version. Re-created search index. Btw, you can use 2-char queries as well, ie.: q3, q2, q1, etc. Most forums require 3-4 char minimum.

[yts] tags also need an update, because of the new YouTube API -- it is nothing forum-related.

:)

[yts] ported to YouTube v3 API, with some improvements, with [yts=...] you can add 'h' and 'l' to search for HD and LONG videos, or both. For example:
Code: Select all
[yts=5hl]query[/yts] - find 5 most relevant videos, all of them must be HD and longer than 20 min
[yts=5lh]query[/yts] - same as above
[yts=4h]query[/yts]  - find 4 most relevant videos, all of them must be HD, any duration
[yts=3l]query[/yts]  - find 3 most relevant videos, all of them must longer than 20 min, any resolution
[yts=2]query[/yts]   - find 2 most relevant videos, any duration, any resolution
[yts]query[/yts] or [yts=1]query[/yts] - find 1 most relevant video, any duration, any resolution

- query is using phpBB's '{INTTEXT}' which is "Unicode letter characters, numbers, spaces, commas, dots, minus, plus, hyphen, underscore and whitespaces.", so don't use () or anything else not listed.
- search will skip non-embeddable videos
- if nothing is found, or only non-embeddable videos are found, it will output an error with a link to Google search:

- it's possible to use OR and to exclude words: term1 -OR- term2 -term3 (OR must have hyphens & spaces around, " -OR- ")
- everything is using HTTPS, that is, any query, links to thumbnails and video loading code
- thumbnails will be in high resolution when available

Interesting, without the '1' at the end it will list #2 first, probably because it is judged more relevant, with '1' at the end, we get #1 first since it more precisely matches the title, and #2 follows.

When you browse this site over SSL/TLS connection (simply go to https://vogonhq.com/) HTTP/2 protocol will be enabled. It replaces older HTTP/1 and SPDY protocols, and it works only over SSL/TLS, it won't work for normal non-secured connection. This is intentional and designed for people to switch to HTTPS if they want to enjoy all the benefits of new technology. The main advantage of HTTP/2 is decreased latency, and improved page speed.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP/2
Goals
[...]
Decrease latency to improve page load speed in web browsers by considering:
- Data compression of HTTP headers
- Server push technologies
- Pipelining of requests
- Fixing the head-of-line blocking problem in HTTP 1
- Multiplexing multiple requests over a single TCP connection
[...]
Encryption
HTTP/2 is defined for both HTTP URIs (i.e. without encryption) and for HTTPS URIs (over TLS, where TLS 1.2 or newer is required).
Although the standard itself does not require usage of encryption, most client implementations (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE, Edge) have stated that they will only support HTTP/2 over TLS, which makes encryption de facto mandatory.

You can also install HTTP/2 and SPDY indicator for Chrome (also Opera and Iron) or Firefox, to see when HTTP/2 is enabled.
