Suggestions for some heavy shit?

Postby IriDeck » Thu Sep 10, 2009 13:36 UTC

Okay, metal fans of Vogon. I know we have a ton of 'em, and I need suggestions. Frustrations IRL have reached an all-time high for me, and I need some kickass metal to help me keep my shit together.

Tastes vary, and I'm honestly not sure what kind of metal I'm in the mood for...I'll know it when I hear it, though. Just about anything that makes me want to break shit should help. :)

No need for Youtube links at this point; just gimme a list of your faves for similar situations, and I'll try to locate them.

Thanks in advance!

Vivaldi's Four Seasons is amazing. While Spring seems to be the most popular, I like Summer the best. Have you seen the I Musici covers on YouTube? Impressive speed they all have, particularly the lead violinist:

Actually, one of AG's posts from Now Playing III has been resonating better with me than I would have originally realized: Sunny Day Real Estate - Killed By An Angel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZS1GW2oivE)

(Both purposely not embedded for display reasons.)

No other assistance from my peers? Ah well...

I'm not much into metal tbh iri, I DJ on a part time basis, used to be full time but I just cant fit it in as much as I'd like nowadays, so often I end up listening (loudly) to some stuff that wouldn't normally be my preference - but still, heavy metal isn't that big a part of the DJing game. Closest I would probably get to that would be some soft rock :) Which i enjoy actually, in a non gay way of course.

Hey, cool! What did you DJ mostly? Common themes seem to be hip-hop and techno...

Just a note, i am not sure what you exactly want. Heavy can be normal heavy metal, like Dio, Black Sabbath, Manowar. If you want more aggression then trash, speed, death and black metal are best. Even there you have very different bands, for example Marduk and Darkspace are both extreme black metal, but from totally different worlds.

Hi Iri! Looking forward to our next late night rail n hook extravaganza!

IriDeck wrote:No need for Youtube links at this point; just gimme a list of your faves for similar situations, and I'll try to locate them.

Seems peeps forgot to read this part. :D

I think a fast way to find stuff is to start looking at subgenres: heavy, thrash, death, power, gothic and one fav, black. This way, you can plug those subgenres into your browser, start taking listens and find which direction you lean in. To get your bearings, here are some thoughts:

If you like fast-driving, straight-beat grooves, thrash/death metal will make your belly feel warm. Great for when you need a pick-me-up.
If your into dark, church-burning noise, black metal may be your path. Good for driving or toking!
If you liked the 90s style, power metal may be right up your alley. Some think it lacks style, I disagree as it typically has more room (space).

One style I will never get tired of is hardcore. I just looked at some of my favorite bands and it turns out they fall into a newly formed subgenre: Metalcore, or Metallic hardcore. Personal favorite: Bad Brains (I Against I, Quickness). If I had to make a choice of one genre/subgenre of music, this would be my choice. A great choice for any sport, travel or mental departure! Usually much more thoughtful than anything with the exception of classical.

Hunting for new tunes is always so rewarding! Have fun.

Okay, I admit I didnt read the part about no youtube links :D

I listen to good music, which can be some kind of metal as well ofcourse
These should be familiar:

Slayer
Bolt thrower
Morbid Angel
Dark angel
Terrorizer
Death
SOD
Type o negative
Abba ( yeah, I know, but I like them anyway)

All of them have released timeless classic albums, and I still listen to them on occasion. In fact this moment Dark angel is playing on my Itunes.

These will bring you the energy you need
