Its because of the chipset driver difference on your PC. Its fairly common, if ur just gonna wipe it and reload it, just boot up to 98 and format it. But for some reason if your wanted XP to load. You'll have to pop in a XP cd and do a repair on the OS.

Nope, if the chipset is super different it wont work because drivers also effect registry. If u get corruptions or errors in registry it will not allow you to boot up. Ex: something like ATI to Nvidia or Intel to AMD. U dont happen to just have a old CDrom laying around would u?

Windows 98 is not so well at moving between motherboards. Only once have I gotten a 98 drive to like a new board. And there are limitations for 98, specifically RAM size. Windows XP is even more picky about drivers. It is a copy protection mechanism.

good news. i got 98se installed and working with backup cdrom drive..problem is dat this old system was running xp and most drivers are all the way back to 2k and if winME :( ill have to do some searching for soundcard drivers and IGP drivers atleast.

any info on dat would be nice. here's the comp model gateway E-1800 its at 1.2ghz factory cpu wich i will replace with 800mhz cpu socket 370. im pretty sure it can go back to maybe 600mhz but no lower

now it has 256mb ram more than enough for anything 20gig hdd temp for now until apoc sends his 40gig. and voodoo 2 12mb vid card for oldgames like HL Q1 :) certain ones dat windows vista or 7 dont like running at all or compatbility mode works half the time.. and no i dont like dosbox im not good at commands :(

For old PCs you can get all drivers automatically installed with driver packs from http://driverpacks.net/.

I agree. This is an excellent site. They help out well with the "wtf is this HwID" type driver request.

quick question. what is the latest browser used for 98 and still able to browse internet without any issues? i was thinking firefox but im not sure if ie 6+ higher is able to install. i hooked my friend up with a 98se machine i got for free so that he can use it for misc stuff..if he gets errors from sites or viruses he dont have to worry cause hes using 98 machine :) hes also into linux and i know some linux can run on it

http://www.opera.com/ is #1 for older systems. Even most recent versions can run there and you have rock solid stable browser.
There is also a portable USB edition here: http://www.opera-usb.com/operausben.htm which i highly recommend, for older and new PCs.

For blocking ads, which is especially useful on w98 where every resource counts, try this:
http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/opera/ (either "Main list" or "With Stat/Tracking Sites")
