Vogon Beginner Info

Postby chaos252 » Thu May 26, 2011 07:55 UTC

I see a lot of players who don't know how to use basic binds and commands in vogon, or even get to the console for that matter. I try and help as many as I can but I'm not in there all the time. I'd like to put up a short list of basic stuff that every new player should know.

First, all binds and commands will be put in the console. Press the ~ key to access the console.

In place of (key) type the key you would like to bind.
Ex. for right-click type mouse2, for space bar type space

To assign the ALTERNATE FIRE on/off toggle type:
/bind (key) af

To assign the GRAPPLING HOOK type:
/bind (key) +button5

For improved connection/ping performance use these commands.

/snaps 40

/rate 40000

For additional info on customizing your settings check out this site http://www.planetquake3.net/tweak/glossary_commands.html

Reason: changed rate from 25000 to 40000, our servers support max 80000 and with excessive games rate above 25000 is best

Nice post, very useful, however noobs never read forum. :-D (or even bind info in console)

/snaps 30 - max value, 40 is recommended by many people, however 30 is max value with original q3 and ioq3
/rate 40000 or more is best, server supports 64000-80000 usually. Regular game doesn't need that much, but it can add up if there is a lot of action on small/open maps. Spikes can go up to 50000+. With Q3 rate is not real kbit/s, because compression is also used.

See the thing is, even regular players that have been on for years don't know some of this stuff. Hopefully it catches somebodies attention..

I didnt know /rate went that high! I'll have to try that

Yes some people don't know, this is why server uses higher settings than default q3, still it is always good to optimize it further, especially rate.

Yes I use rate 80000. And a little bit of mouse tweaking (sens and accel) but it takes a lot of fiddling to get them just how you like them. If you radically adjust values you're uncontrollable :DD
But hey, make a note of the original value of things you adjust, so you can always put it back if something is too wild!

You can use /reset command to restore cvar's original value.

For example:
Code: Select all
/reset cl_mouseAccel
