Privoxy - potential slowdowns

Postby dyn » Tue Apr 28, 2009 16:52 UTC

Just a quick note, if you are using Privoxy to block ads (Chrome, IE, ...), sometimes it may lag your browsing, not because of filters, which are pretty fast, but because of something else. It may happen only if you use 10+ tabs and don't restart you browser for long time, not sure what is it, but when i disabled it, browsing was much faster.

Best option to block ads is to use FF and Adblock Plus.

Noscript would tend to disagree.

Noscript is diff plugin, it has nothing to do with Privoxy app and slowdown was not because of JavaScript -- when Privoxy was off everything worked fast, with all the old tabs/pages still opened, without restarting the browser. Adblock is also separate plugin, nothing to do with Noscript. Plus, i think using Noscript all the time is way too paranoid, since we are not using IE5 anymore with all the exploits out there.

anarchists = popparazzi = internet ads = internet spam = cable tv movies that get interrupted 17+ minutes/hour

If we apply the notion that we can innudate people with stuff and that is "OK" then how come we aren't allowed to walk into a deli and piss on the cheese when we feel like it?
I MEAN after all..WE wanted to piss on the cheese and cheese isn't illegal.

So many things in society are just "WRONG" The idea that people want, need, or that even it's "OK" to keep putting ads into peoples faces...setting cookies on their machine(all without their permission) cookies which remain for weeks, years, etc...cookies read by yet other web sites and communicated bad to ad servers to "tailor" your surfing experience to the ADS you viewed in the past. (not that you really viewed them just that they were successfully able to place a cookie into your temp files) now you get ads for stuff you never intended, but the internet is "TAILORING" your viewing experience.

It is "HELPING YOU" surf and view "ONLY THOSE ADS YOU WANT"

Life without banner ads is possible.

Please check into the "OUTDOORS" rehab society today. We will allow you to sit outside under a nice shade tree and read a book in peace; free from interruptions or ads.
IF you or a loved one you know suffers from adsviewedtoomuchanditmadeyouill, please call our toll free number today. We are hear to help. (pun in 10 did)

I think blocking ads, tivo skipping adverts, is all good.

PROGRESS even in today's world.

Ever notice how many billboards on the way to the Casino's show you making money but the ones on the other side of the highway coming back suggest a "gambling counseling number" ?

Ever notice the sheer number of billboards about crap that you don't ever need?

Popularity has been reduced to innudation.

And INNUNDATION through sensory depravation is brainwashing.

End of rant
