PC Upgrade Decisions

Postby frag_bait » Wed Feb 20, 2019 01:26 UTC

Hi guys, just curious about what everyone is running nowadays. I am stilll playing on the same machine I built in 2011 or 12. It's pretty ancient with its AMD Phenom II 945 processor and Geforce GTX 560. It's a manual crank, and tbh my shoulder is not what it used to be. :D I have upgraded this machine all the way to Win10 with a SSD but the old girl is getting a little long in the tooth.
I do have a budget so I am thinking probably a ryzen 5 2600x and maybe a Geforce 1070, but I'll probably opt to save some money and go with the 1050. Also thinking 16 gb of ram. Thoughts?

Go with 1070, it is much faster, and perhaps upgrade RAM in 2 steps, first 8 GB, which will run stuff just fine, and then add another 8 GB with same specs, so they can both work a bit faster in dual channel mode. Or go with 2x2 4 GB modules in case you don't plan to upgrade over 16 GB.

Hey Frag,

I've built several gaming PC's over the years.
My current rig is:
CPU Intel i7-7700K
Mobo Asus Z270 Prime A
Ram 16gb G.Skill TridentZ DDR4 3200
GPU MSI GTX1070 Gaming X 4G
SSD Crucial MX 300
plus more
And a glorious 27 inch IPS G-Sync monitor Asus ROG Swift PG279Q

All that with a blazing fast fiber internet. (just to spend my time playing COD4)

No wonder. :) Thanks for the specs.

Ok and so it begins. I just ordered the ASUS GTX 1070. I will use that for a while before upgrading everything else. Thanks again for your help.

You know Nvidia just released the GTX1660Ti that is as fast or faster than the GTX1070 and is currently running a little cheaper.
